Reconditioning is the second step in our therapeutic method. Once we’ve helped you identify the limiting beliefs and emotional loops behind your reactions (using Pattern Theory), we use reconditioning to help your brain stop treating those beliefs as threats.
This process is designed to shift automatic responses, reduce emotional reactivity, and create real, lasting change — not just coping strategies.
Many clients come to us after years of doing the work. They’ve journaled, gone to therapy, read the books — and still find themselves reacting in the same old ways.
That’s because emotional reactions often aren’t driven by logic — they’re driven by the brain’s threat detection system, which we call the Walnut Brain.
When the Walnut Brain perceives something as dangerous (even if it’s not), it takes over.
Reconditioning is how we help that system stop reacting to old, no-longer-accurate beliefs like:
“I’m not good enough”
“If I stop, I’ll fail”
“I have to hold everything together”
After successful reconditioning, clients often describe their experience like this:
“I don’t feel that way anymore.”
“It’s not even a struggle — I just respond differently.”
“It’s like the weight lifted and didn’t come back.”
This isn’t about suppressing emotion or forcing new habits — it’s about removing the fuel behind the reactions.
Reconditioning is the third stage in the ShiftGrit Core Method.
